Latest: Police Arrest 28 Suspects Over Yelwata Deaths
The Nigerian Police have arrested 28 persons suspected to be masterminds of the deaths in Yelwata community, Benue State.
Naija Report mentions that gunmen, suspected to be herders, had on June 14, 2025, attacked the Yelwata community in the Guma Local Administration Area of Benue state, leaving numerous dead and thousands of others displaced.
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, while addressing a report conference in Abuja on Tuesday, stated the police were on the heels of other suspects involved in the Yelwata deaths.
The IGP clarified that out of the 28 arrested persons, two have been cleared as they were only used as bait to arrest the 26 suspected masterminds.
He assured Nigerians that the police are not overwhelmed as they are mopping up light and minor weapons that several persons have illegally acquired.
According to Egbetokun, the protection operatives are additionally intensifying their border patrols in order to curtail the influx of irregular migrants into the country.
The IGP added that the arrested suspects will soon be arraigned in court, including the 22 suspects who were arrested in Jos over the gruesome murder of nine persons travelling to Quanpan for a wedding.
