Saint Janet, born Omotoyosi Kayode Iyun Ajilore, is a Nigerian singer known for her controversial fusion of gospel and sexually explicit music. Born and raised in Abeokuta, Ogun State, she grew up in a religious household and was deeply involved in the church. Her musical journey began in the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, where she sang in the choir. Her early devotion to church music earned her the nickname “Saint Janet,” which would later become her stage name.
Her professional music career began in her teenage years, around the age of 15, when she joined the band of Segun Lawaye, a prominent juju-gospel musician. For many years, Saint Janet performed primarily as a backing vocalist, learning the ropes of the live music industry and perfecting her skills on stage. However, as time progressed, she began to desire something more daring and unconventional. Eventually, she broke away from the traditional gospel and juju formats and formed her own band, Saint Janet and the Fuja Band.
What set Saint Janet apart from other Nigerian musicians—particularly female performers—was her bold and unapologetic use of erotic language in her music. Her lyrics were shockingly explicit, often describing intimate and sexual scenarios in great detail, and this earned her both criticism and a cult-like following. She combined fuji and juju rhythms with elements of gospel, and sometimes even embedded Christian choruses into sexually charged songs, creating a sound that was as controversial as it was unique.
